Adoption Conference

Pause music first

This past weekend Jon and I attended an adoption conference that was perfectly timed.

Our home study papers should be complete by Friday and our Dossier has all of the papers we need with the exception of Jon's authenticated birth certificates.  When that comes in, we'll notarize and authenticate and send 'er off.  In the midst of all of the paperwork, I'd lost sight of the little girl at the end of the journey.  But the conference brought her to life again.  I was asked to consider the hard things of adoption like trans-racial and attachment issues that will likely surface to some degree or another.  I'm the type to consider worst case scenarios first and then let the joys surprise me later.  But I'm finding that knowledge is good and I do want to be prepared.

The best part about the conference was that 4 of the 5 families that I know adopting from Rwanda were there.  It was so great to look around the room and see dozens of friends and familiar faces also considering this journey.  We know we will not be alone.

The above song is by Aaron Ivey who played and spoke for us as well.  He and his wife have one biological child, one domestic adoption and 2 from Haiti (before the earthquake).  What an inspiration.  I love the song.  It plays through my head daily as I dream of our little girl.

Pray for her.  We are requesting a baby 5-10 months old.  She may be in uetero right now or just a tiny baby.  We don't know what will lead to her arrival in the orphanage but whatever it is, it won't be good.  Relinquished or abandoned, this baby deserves love.  I want to love and protect her as soon as I humanly can.  God is in control of the timing and I am falling in love with her even as I wait.

  1. Hi!

We're adopting from Rwanda and live in Austin too! It would be great to connect with other families in Austin. Rachel and I briefly connected in December.

  2. Laura,

We'd love to meet you guys. Please feel free to email me at kayanlewis@aol.com. Maybe when it warms up we can meet somewhere where the kids can play.

We are finishing up month 4 since our dossier went to Rwanda. We're using an agency.
