So I'm running my first 5K this Saturday!! I say first not because I've never been in a 5K but because this is my first time to RUN. Don't get me wrong. I signed up for my first 5K with all intention of running but quickly found out a little training would have been appropriate for my non-running self.
If you know me AT ALL, you know long term endurance is NOT my strong suit. I'm all for the short, fast sprint, but make me endure and sweat over time and I'm outta there. So I realize that for some a 5K IS a short, easy sprint, but for me this is running forever. I've been training for 2 months now, (don't laugh) and I think I'm really ready. I'm just now at the point where I think I can say I'm enjoying this. Maybe. Of course the Texas heat is kicking in strong this week with highs topping out in the mid 90's with strong humidity and if anything will kill my love for the sport, that will be it or bad knees, or the crazy hills in the neighborhood, or exhaustion, or a bad hair day or, well, you get the idea.
So, there are lessons in this. I'm learning that achievement in life takes something I've not tried too often. Perseverance. Hard work. Sacrifice. Suffering. (don't make me go on). So I'm giving it a try in this race and hopefully some other areas of my life. I'll let you know on Saturday what else this race teaches me about the race of life, but for now, I'm THRILLED and just a wee bit proud that I actually signed up and if all goes well, will actually RUN a 5K this Saturday! Just think, I may run a 10K some day. No marathons Cheryl. Not even close :o)
