Out of the Woods and Into the Clearing

When the Aliyah was admitted to the hospital on Friday we knew things were bad, but there was no way I could have known how bad.  The Dr. discovered pneumonia, bronchitus, and ear infections, but we also found that the infection had spread to her blood.  Her white blood cell count was 26000 when normal is 10000 or lower.  Her fever was 105 or more whenever her medications would wear off.  Things here at Aga Khan Hospital have been a little intense.  Aliyah was given an IV on Friday with a very strong antibiotic.  Later she experienced episodes of Delirium from the lack of oxygen to her lungs and then brain.  She was "happy" but not coherant.  It was very scarry!!  Saturday the nurses attempted to insert the IV again in order to administer the antibiotic and then fluids.  They were unable to find a line after 4 EXCRUCIATING attempts.  At that point it was decided to give her the antibiotic intermuscularly.  Better but still traumatic.
Aliyah is very aware and any time a nurse enters the room, her eyes almost begin to narrow.  If she sees gloves, she cries.  She has quickly learned NOT to like hospitals or their staff.

Even afer her second round of strong antibiotics, her fever was once again 105.5.  This just indicates the severity with which we were dealing.  Due to the fact tha we would REALLY like to go home on Monday, the Dr. has now discharged us and we are about to make our way out.  He will give us lots of medication for her and we will have her injected for the fourth and last time tomorrow morning.

RIght now her lungs are CLEAR!  Praise God for that!  The congestion is still quite thick so we continue to pray that this as well as the ear infections will be treated by the antibiotic and that the flight home will be uneventful.  We've still got a way to go before being 100% but AGAIN we are amazed by the providence of this detour and know God's hand was very merciful and kind.

We will spend our night tonight in the newest hotel in Nairobi.  I have to say, I'm ready for a little comfort :o)

We will leave Monday night and hope to arrive by 4:00 on Tuesday afternoon.  Kyle and Clayton, here we come!
(Dr. Wangai and nurse Christine...not a great shot of any of us, but this is about reality right :o))
